Norwood Ecumenical Food Pantry seeking Assistant Director
Ecumenical Community Food Pantry of Norwood Seeks Volunteer Leader to Guide Growing Organization
The Co-Assistant Director will co-lead food pantry operations across multiple areas. In leadership and strategy, the position involves collaborating with the Board of Directors to set strategic direction, develop long-range plans, and ensure mission alignment. Operationally, the role oversees daily food pantry activities, sets policies and programs, and routinely reviews procedures to ensure the organization adapts to dynamic community needs.
Critical functions include managing inventory through food procurement from various organizations and vendors, maintaining inventory control, ensuring food safety, overseeing facility maintenance, and coordinating distribution. The position also plays a vital role in fundraising and development by providing insights into organizational food drives, grant management, and cultivating major donor relationships.
Working alongside volunteer and outreach coordinators, the Co-Assistant Director supervises volunteers, oversees recruitment and training, builds partnerships with local organizations, and increases community awareness of the pantry's mission. Financial stewardship responsibilities include ensuring fiscal responsibility and providing regular updates to the Treasurer, while maintaining close collaboration with Board committees on planning, finance, and organizational development.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The pantry seeks candidates with strong leadership, management, and organizational skills combined with excellent written and oral communication abilities. The ideal candidate can work effectively with diverse personalities, handle conflict professionally, and make sound independent decisions.
Technical proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office and Gmail/Drive is required. Experience with Oasis and Greater Boston Food Bank systems is desired but not required. Nonprofit or small business management experience is preferred.
Candidates must have the ability to read, write, and speak English clearly in person and over the phone, with visual acuity sufficient to read computer screens, nutrition labels, and expiration dates. Schedule flexibility is essential, including availability during client service hours and Saturday operations. A Unique Opportunity
This volunteer position offers more than typical volunteer work—it provides comprehensive experience in nonprofit leadership, operations, fundraising, and community engagement. For individuals considering a career transition into the nonprofit sector, semi-retired professionals seeking meaningful community engagement, or passionate advocates for food justice, this role offers both immediate impact and professional growth opportunities.
There is a pathway to move into the Executive Director position depending on experience and performance.
