Taps Across America at Old Parish Cemetery

This Memorial Day, May 25, at 3:00 p.m., Taps will sound at Old Parish Cemetery to honor the more than 50 veterans interred there, including 29 men who served in the American Revolution. This year, the tribute will feature two trumpeters from Norwood public schools: Arielle Jones and Gabriel Martinez Ovando.

The time 3 p.m. was chosen because it is the time when most Americans are enjoying the national holiday. The National Moment was first proclaimed for Memorial Day in May 2000 and was put into law by the United States Congress in December 2000.

TAPS ACROSS AMERICA originally began in 2015 and gained renown nationally in 2020 when picnics, parades, and other celebrations were cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. Then, more than 10,000 musicians joined in a nationwide salute to remember fallen service members. TAPS ACROSS AMERICA brings the country together, offering everyone an opportunity to Honor, Reflect and Remember in the true spirit of Memorial Day.

Old Parish Preservation Volunteers will be in the cemetery beginning at 1:00 p.m. to guide visitors and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about the cemetery and the veterans interred there. As always, the graves of 51 veterans from the Colonial Wars, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War will be decorated with flags and flowers. At 3:00 p.m., Taps will sound to close our day of remembrance. The general public is invited to attend.
