Norwood takes a snow day

The Sunday-to-Monday storm dropped more than a foot of snow (more in some places) on Norwood, but the Town appeared to keep up with most of it.

While the roads on Monday weren’t pristine, many found travel to be feasible. But the roads around Norwood, particularly in Dedham and Walpole, were still covered in snow while pavement was clearly visible on main roads through Norwood.

Norwood Public Schools saw only a two-hour delay on Tuesday, while many other districts were still closed, and trash and recycling resumed on Tuesday as well.

That’s not to say there weren’t problems. On Monday, many Department of Public Works (DPW) employees were seen dealing with difficult snow drifts, especially around the Town Hall. Several workers, who spoke to The Record off the record, said they had been working long shifts to get the Town back up and running.

Many took advantage of Monday’s school closure, however, to get outside and do some sledding, the likes of which haven’t been seen for more than a decade.

“It’s great, I mean it’s a lot, the snow drifts are crazy but it’s fun for the kids,” resident Marie Adams said. “It’s great to be together and watch everybody have so much fun, but it’s a lot of work for everybody and for the Town.”

“And it’s painful to walk around in all this deep snow,” said Adams’ son Colton.

Colton said this was his first time seeing this much snow, and he liked it enough to want to see it again.

Marie Adams said she was thankful the Town was able to clear her street and give them the opportunity to get out and enjoy the fresh powder.

“But they’re working on it as much as they can,” she said, adding that her family did their part in the shoveling department. “My husband did a lot of it. We did a bit of the deck and he did the driveway.”

Colton added that there was a good reason for just clearing “a bit” of the deck, as the stairs offer prime sledding real estate.

“Don’t clear the stairs!” he said. “We love to slide down.”

Residents Greg Keohane and Lou Ottaviani said they enjoyed the snow, at least after they were done cleaning it up.

“We enjoy it once in a while,” Keohane said. “Not every year, but a snow storm like this is good to experience every decade or so.”

“Snow days are great,” Ottaviani said.

Keohane said they walked to the high school, while Ottaviani said he’s been driving around a bit.

“The roads are great right now,” he said. “No issues at all, so great job Norwood! A lot better than some other towns around us.”

Keohane said they scheduled shoveling around the Patriots.

“I shoveled before the game, after the game and in the morning,” he said.

“Lots of snowblowing today,” Ottaviani said. “Last night, today, driveway, sidewalks, neighbors, it was good, it was good to be out there in the snow.”

Residents Allyson Doherty and Amy Dee said they were having fun out at the high school helping their kids sled down the hill.

“I don’t think it’s snowed like this since maybe 2013 or so, so they’ve never seen this much snow in their lives,” Dee said.

Doherty said she managed to avoid shoveling for this storm.

“I had to do some work from home so I had to sit on the computer,” she said with a laugh.
